getting started with the R9-2xx series cards and Debian or Ubuntu

assuming you have a fresh install of Debian or one of it’s variants, the following steps should apply. if you are doing this on a different distribution, alter the commands to fit your environment.

before you begin, update all the packages on your system and grabbing additional packages which we will need

# sudo su

# apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

# apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r) gcc make libncurses-dev libcurl4-openssl-dev

# reboot

get the latest drivers from the links below and keep in mind that version 3.7.2 of cgminer is the last version to support the scrypt algorithm and you should be using nothing later than version 3.7.2

once you have downloaded these drivers, proceed with the initial installation of the AMD graphic drivers using the following command

# unzip amd-catalyst-13.12.linux-x86.x86_64.zip — If you are using the 32 bit version of the catalyst drivers, please change the file name to reflect the name of the file you have downloaded

# chmod +x amd-catalyst-13.12-linux-x86.x86_64.run

# ./amd-catalyst-13.12-linux-x86.x86_64.run

once the installer has completed, reboot the system

# reboot

after the system has been rebooted, proceed with the installation of the APP-SDK by issuing the following commands

# sudo su

# tar -xvzf AMD-APP-SDK-v2.9-lnx64.tgz — once again, if you are installing this using the 32bit linux package, change the file name to reflect the appropriate file name

# ./Install-AMD-APP.sh — this is a package script which does the heavy lifting of copying the relevant files into the appropriate directories. the readme.txt file also contains all the information on where the files are copied to

once the installer has completed, reboot the system

# reboot

with the amd catalyst drivers and the app-sdk installed, proceed with the compilation of cgminer with the adlsdk via the following commands

# sudo su

# bunzip2 cgminer-3.7.2.tar.bz2

# tar -xvf cgminer-3.7.2.tar.bz2

# unzip ADL_SDK_6.0.zip

# cp include/* cgminer-3.7.2/ADL_SDK/

# cd cgminer-3.7.2

# ./configure –enable-scrypt –enable-opencl

# make

# make install

# reboot

configure X11 to detect all the adapters by issusing the following commands

# sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

# sudo aticonfig –adapter=all –initial -f — each time you install or remove a card, this command needs to be issued for the system to detect the new card

testing and configuring cgminer

# cgminer -n — Display number of detected GPUs and OpenCL platform information

# export DISPLAY=:0

# export GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT=100

# export GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS=1

# export XAUTHORITY=/.Xauthority 

# screen -dmS cgminer cgminer –all-your-options-go-here

## to detach from the screen session, use CTRL+a followed by d

## to list all available screen sessions, use screen -ls

## to reconnect to a screen session, use “screen -r session_id”
